Few gardeners imagine their country life without planting potatoes. For some, this crop occupies only a few beds, while in other farms hectares of sown areas are allotted for potatoes. Most summer residents plant potatoes in the old-fashioned way, as has been done from generation to generation, but now there are more and more alternative methods that quickly find their adherents among both experienced gardeners and beginners.

The article tells about new, unconventional, methods of planting potatoes in a personal plot, many of which the owners of summer cottages do not even know about.

Landing in buckets

Planting in buckets is suitable for those who have very little area on the site for growing potatoes or who want to grow their own crops on the balcony.

For planting, you will need a bucket with a capacity of at least 10 liters, you can use an old one that has served its day. Landing involves the following procedure:

  1. We make drainage holes in the bottom.
  2. We pour a layer of soil 10-15 cm thick, put 1-2 potato tubers on the surface, and sprinkle it on top with the same layer of earth. We put the bucket in a well-lit place.
  3. After shoots with a height of 10-12 cm have appeared, they are again covered with earth almost completely, so that only the tops remain. The operation is repeated as many times as the capacity of the bucket will allow. This leads to additional root formation, improved plant nutrition and promotes more tuber formation.
  4. It is important to be careful about watering potatoes planted in a bucket, trying not to overmoisten the soil, but also not allowing it to dry out. It is useful to cover the surface of the soil in a bucket with a layer of mulch.
    This method makes it possible to transfer the plants to more favorable conditions, for example, to a greenhouse during frosts in the spring, or to a more shaded place during hot periods. Of the minuses, it should be noted the need to constantly monitor the moisture content of the earth in the bucket.

In a pot

This method differs from the one described above only in the container for growing potatoes. It should be remembered that a potato bush needs a lot of space for development and fruiting. Therefore, a larger pot should be chosen for planting.

From sprouts

It is also called tuberless planting of potatoes and is often used when a large amount of planting material needs to be obtained from several tubers. Let's take a closer look at the tuberless method:

  1. First, the selected potatoes need to be germinated. For planting, it is better to use light shoots obtained by germinating in the light (without direct sunlight).
  2. After sprouts of 8-10 cm with well-visible roots appear on the potato, they need to be unscrewed, treated with a growth stimulator, and planted upside down at a distance of 5 cm from each other.
  3. The tubers themselves can be put on germination again and after 10 days new sprouts will appear on them, suitable for planting.

This method requires additional labor costs for growing seedlings, but it is excellent for rapid breeding of elite varieties and requires several times less seed material.

In car tires

The method consists in planting potatoes in a pyramid of car tires filled with earth., in which sprouted tubers are planted. First, 1-2 tires are used, and as the plant grows, the next one is installed on top and covered with earth so that only the tops of the plant are above the soil surface.

Tubers are formed on stems that are underground. Accordingly, the longer the stems, the more tubers. The height of such a tower can reach 5-6 tires, higher structures are not stable enough.

When growing potatoes in tires, special attention should be paid to watering and maintaining soil moisture, since it dries quickly in black tires. Mulching the soil and painting the tires white can come to the rescue.

From the eyes

If there are only large tubers for planting, the method of planting potatoes with eyes is suitable. Do not be afraid to cut the potatoes before planting, as each sprout is a separate plant with its own root system. When planting potatoes with eyes, the potato yield will be 30-40% more than usual, and all potatoes grow large, more resistant to diseases.

Cut the tubers so that there is an eyelet in each piece. This operation is carried out a few days before planting or immediately before it, but letting the surface of the slices weather or sprinkle them with ash. Plant eyes thicker than regular seed potatoes. Several pieces can be planted in one hole in a circle. Sprinkle on top with a layer of earth or compost.

When growing potatoes from the eyes, it must be borne in mind that while the plants are in full force, it will be necessary to provide them with additional nutrition.

Under the covering material

One of the methods gaining popularity among summer residents is the cultivation of potatoes under a covering material. It allows planting at an earlier date, protecting seedlings from spring frosts and getting an early and fairly large harvest. Agrofibre, cardboard, film and other materials can serve as a shelter.

This method can be explained in more detail using the example of growing potatoes under film. It is used to get an early harvest. When using it, there is no need to wait for the earth to warm up to the desired temperature. Under the film and the spring sun, the soil will pick up the required temperature much faster.

The film can be laid directly on the ground or on arcs installed above the rows. After canceling the threat of frost, the shelter can be removed.

It is important to remember that the film does not allow precipitation to pass through and it is necessary to water it yourself.

How to grow in boxes?

The method consists in planting potatoes in boxes knocked out of boards. First, the height of the box is equal to the width of the board. Earth is poured into it, potato tubers are laid and sprinkled with earth on top.

To get an early harvest, potatoes do not need to be planted in open soil. An ordinary wooden box will help you, the bottom of which is covered with two layers of sheets of paper. As the plant grows, the height of the box increases, nutrient soil and fertilizers are added. When harvesting, some of the boards are removed, allowing access to the tubers.

When choosing a boxed planting method, remember the following:

  • you need to regularly check the moisture content of the soil in the box;
  • plants grown in boxes require additional feeding;
  • it is recommended to carry out treatment from ants that like to arrange their nests in boxes.

We wrote here about how to grow potatoes in boxes or boxes without a bottom.

Chinese way

Recently, the Chinese method of growing potatoes has attracted a lot of interest among gardeners. There are several variations of it. Let's consider the most common one.

  1. For planting, you need potatoes, the size of a chicken egg. The tubers are cut approximately in the middle. The lower part is not involved in the landing.
  2. Within 10-15 days, potatoes germinate in a bright place, but not in direct sunlight.
  3. During this time, a landing site is being prepared on the site. To do this, a trench is dug, at the bottom of which small earthen mounds are made, where the cut tubers sit.
  4. As the potatoes grow, soil is poured into the trench and fertilizers are applied.

The Chinese method of growing potatoes shows good productivity and allows for early harvesting. But not suitable for northern regions and places with high humidity.

According to Kartelev

IN AND. Kartelev, talking about his method, distinguishes three main points:

  • no digging, the soil should be slightly loosened with a flat cutter or rake before planting;
  • using grass as mulch and fertilizer;
  • application of EM technologies.

Potatoes are planted in rows at a distance of 70 cm between rows and 25-30 cm in a row between tubers. From above, everything is covered with grass mulch. This is both additional nutrition for potatoes and protection of the soil from drying out.

Kartelev's method requires a certain amount of labor, but it is very productive. The yield of potatoes is from 400 to 600 kilograms per hundred square meters.

According to Nekrasov

The well-known potato grower I. Ya Nekrasov in his method relies on the fact that potatoes need coolness for tuberization. He plants potatoes twice a season: in February and August.

It should be noted right away that this method was used in the Krasnodar Territory and is not suitable for all regions.

According to Nekrasov's method, potatoes are planted in rows at a distance of 60 cm between them, before the beginning of budding, the bushes are bent towards wide aisles, and from the narrow ones they take soil and sprinkle the bushes.

Good watering and looseness of the soil are also important. You can lay the aisles with hay or straw (see how to grow potatoes under straw here). As a result, the tubers are tied in twice as many as with classical planting methods.

With burdock

When planting potatoes, you can add a handful of chopped burdock leaves and stems to the hole. According to gardeners, this will protect your potato crop from wireworms. The downside is that you can't find enough burdock everywhere in early spring.

Under no circumstances use burdock root - you will be tortured to withdraw!

Non-plowing methods

Planting potatoes without plowing is still alarming for seasoned summer residents, but a new generation of gardeners are increasingly introducing lazy planting methods. And often the effectiveness of the method without plowing is much higher than that of the classical ones.

As the name implies, all these methods are united by the absence of autumn and spring plowing of the land. It is enough to loosen the area with a flat cutter or a rake, you can make small holes and spread the potatoes, and in some cases the tubers are laid directly on the grass. Add a thick layer of straw, hay, grass, or even last year's foliage on top.

Throughout the season, after weeding, the remains of food from the table, husks and other organic debris are carried to the potato beds. When harvest time comes, the organics are pulled apart and beautiful and clean young potatoes are harvested directly from the ground.

How to plant according to the Meatlider?

The essence of growing potatoes according to the Meatlider method is to use narrow beds 9 m long, 45 cm wide and wide row spacings 0.7-1 m. The tubers are planted in 2 staggered rows. But this method will not work if the plantings are not abundantly fertilized, watered and weeded out.

Potatoes can be grown according to the Meatlider method in any soil and in any climatic zone. The disadvantages include the high cost of this method due to the cost of mineral fertilizers.

So we've covered the best new ways to plant and care for the popular root vegetable. Each gardener decides for himself what methods to use when planting potatoes, depending on the available areas, planting material, time, experience. But all of them are united by the desire to receive due reward for their work in the form of a rich harvest of tasty and healthy potatoes.
