At the moment, there are about 2,000 varieties of begonias, strikingly different from each other in the shape of the leaves, color, type and presence of flowers.

Of course, you can buy begonia in almost any flower shop, but it is much more interesting to grow a flower yourself.

Further in the article we will tell you what is called flower rooting and how this process takes place. We will provide step-by-step instructions for propagating a plant with a leaf, and for clarity, you can watch a useful video.

Rooting a plant

Rooting is usually called the process in which a leaf or stalk begins to grow its own roots and develop independently. If we talk about begonias, then it can be attributed to well-rooted indoor plants.... In the case of her, vegetative propagation of begonia is considered the easiest way to get new plants, which even the most inexperienced grower can handle. Reproduction by both leaf and stem cuttings can be carried out in water, or directly in the ground.

How does the procedure take place?

Even a small piece of begonia leaf can grow into an adult plant over time. To do this, it is enough to place it in the right environment and create favorable conditions. When germinating in water, the first roots appear after 1-2 weeks, when they reach a length of 2 cm, the plant is ready for transplanting into the ground (we wrote about how to transplant begonia and how to care for it later in our material) ...

The process of rooting in the ground, as a rule, takes a little longer, but it is considered more reliable, since from the first days of life, a new plant learns to independently extract nutrients from the environment.

Best time to breed

The process of full rooting of begonia takes about 3 months., it is important that this time falls on a period of active growth - spring and summer, when relatively high temperatures and an abundance of natural light will create optimal conditions for the development of a young plant. The end of autumn and winter for most flowers is a dormant period, it is not recommended to try to root begonias at this time, the process can take much longer, or even not be crowned with success.

Step-by-step instructions for propagating a plant with a leaf

For successful rooting, it is important to select a large healthy leaf without damage, the mother plant must be an adult, fully formed and not weakened.

Not all begonias reproduce successfully by leaf rooting. (about what types of annual and perennial begonias are and how to care for them, read here). For these purposes, most decorative deciduous species with villi on the underside of the leaf and plants with hanging shoots are suitable.

There are three main types of rooting of begonia leaves:

  • rooting in water;
  • rooting of a whole leaf in the ground;
  • rooting of a leaf fragment in the ground.

The first method is considered the easiest, but as a result, you can get only one new plant. For rooting in water, you must:

  1. Cut off a large, healthy leaf with a shank.
  2. Fill the container with water at room temperature and add an activated carbon tablet.
  3. Place the prepared sheet in water by about a third.
  4. To speed up the emergence of roots, you can add a root solution to the water.

When the length of the roots reaches 1-2 cm, the sprout is planted in the ground. When rooting a whole leaf of begonia, the procedure is as follows:

  1. Similar to the first method, select and cut a large healthy leaf, approximately 7 cm long.
  2. Make small cuts across the veins.
  3. Prepare a container and soil for planting. The soil must be placed in layers: the lower layer is a mixture of peat and moss, the upper one is river sand. The thickness of the top layer must be at least 2 cm.
  4. Place the sheet on the surface of the moistened soil and press lightly.
  5. Organize a greenhouse, spray the ground with water as needed.

Important! All cuts must be made with a sharp knife or blade. When using scissors, the cut points are pinched, and the flow of nutrients to them stops.

When rooting by dividing the leaf into fragments, as a result, several seedlings can be obtained at once. The leaf selected for reproduction is divided into triangular sections so that at least one whole vein remains in each, then each of the triangles is planted in the ground with a sharp edge by about a third.

High temperature and humidity must be maintained for successful rooting., therefore, the best option would be to place the seedlings in a greenhouse. After about three months, young plants can be transplanted into separate pots.

We suggest looking at the video of what a rooted begonia leaf looks like in water:

Landing rules

The first pot of begonia should be small and wide, both plastic containers and clay or ceramic are suitable, the main thing is that there are enough drainage holes at the bottom. It is best to choose a soil special for begonias, but universal for flowering plants is also suitable. You can independently achieve the desired effect by mixing turf, leafy soil, peat and sand in a ratio of about 2: 1: 1: 1.

Landing procedure:

  1. Pour a drainage layer on the bottom of the pot, on top of it, for additional protection of delicate roots from an excess of moisture, you can pour a small layer of charcoal.
  2. Then a small amount of earth is poured (1-2 cm).
  3. A seedling is placed in the center of the pot and carefully sprinkled with earth from all sides.
  4. After planting, the begonia must be watered abundantly with water and make sure that the ground does not dry out completely for some time.

Do not tamp the soil when planting, as this can damage young fragile roots (how to plant begonia at home?). If the soil subsides after watering, it is necessary to add the missing amount.

Follow-up care

The rules for caring for young plants are not significantly different from caring for adults, with the only difference that they need a little more attention (how to grow and care for room begonia?). Providing comfortable conditions, a small sprout will quickly grow stronger and turn into a full-fledged plant:

  • Like all people from tropical countries, begonias need bright, diffused light, they will feel good on the southern and southeastern windowsill.

Attention! Direct sunlight can cause overheating of the plant and burns on the leaves, so in the summer, begonia should be slightly shaded.

  • A room temperature of + 18-22 degrees is optimal for begonias; sharp drops and drafts should be avoided.
  • Increased humidity is needed, while spraying begonia is categorically not recommended - this can lead to various diseases on the leaves, for example, powdery mildew.
  • Watering begonias needs regular and plentiful, about 2 times a week, while it is important to ensure that water does not accumulate in the pan, and the topsoil has time to dry out.

Thin fragile stems and delicate leaves of begonia give the impression that this plant is fragile, whimsical, capable of perishing at the slightest deviation from ideal conditions. In practice, this is not at all the case, begonias are quite hardy, and many varieties are able to live even in the open field.

Rooting begonias with a leaf is one of the easiest and fastest ways to breed it. If you follow simple rules, you can get a real flower garden from just one or two leaves, filling the atmosphere in the house with coziness and spring freshness.
