Feature and Description

Bordeaux 237 has a round-flat shape, deep red color and barely noticeable banding. The surface is rough, the pulp is firm and sugary. As it grows, the fruit is pushed out of the ground to nearly half its size. The weight of a ripe fruit is 230-500 grams. The yield is 70–90 tons per hectare. One-seeded beets are called because only one fruit grows from one seed.

The variety was obtained during the Great Patriotic War at the All-Russian Research Institute selection and seed production of vegetable crops. The beginning of mass use throughout the country began in 1943. When creating a species, scientists, first of all, pursued the goals of high yield and low plant death.

Difference from other varieties

Due to the ability to harvest several times a year, the variety is intended for cultivation in warm regions of the country. But this does not mean that it is not suitable for medium to temperate climates. Bordeaux can be planted before winter and at the beginning of summer you can enjoy a tasty and healthy root vegetable.

Buying seeds

There are two types of seeds on sale: "Bordeaux 237" and "Bordeaux single-seeded beetroot". The second variety has a lower weight of the root crop (150-230 grams). Seeds can be purchased all year round from specialized stores for gardeners and chain stores during the planting period.

Depending on the manufacturer, the price ranges from 12 to 50 rubles per bag. Pack weight 3-5 grams, content 40-50 pieces. Trash is often found inside.

When to plant?

You can start planting beets already at the end of April or in the winter way in the second half of October, before the first frost, so that the seeds do not die. Before winter, it is good to add humus to the soil, and mineral fertilizer in spring.

Bordeaux is planted only in sunny areas, even a little shading can significantly reduce the yield. The root crop grows well in places where potatoes, cucumbers, tomatoes, onions used to grow.

The soil

It is important to pay attention to the indicators of soil acidity. This variety requires neutral or slightly acidic soils for good growth. Even with a slight increase in acidity, the roots become very shallow and become fibrous and tough. With an excess of alkali in the soil, fungal rot appears on the roots and leaves. Neutral loamy soil is the best option for growing beets.

Landing

Bordeaux is planted in an ordinary way, the width between the rows is 45 cm. And they also use two-line sowing, in which the distance between the rows remains the same as in the first case, and 20 cm is left between the belts. In the same way, the three-line sowing method can be performed. On heavy soils, the seeds are deepened by 2 cm, on light soils - by 4 cm. The bed is formed of high or medium height.

Temperature regime

Bordeaux belongs to cold-hardy crops. Its seeds begin to germinate at a temperature of 4-5 ° C. Growing temperature + 22 ° С. Poorly tolerates frost. Seedlings can withstand temperatures down to -2 ° C. Prolonged cooling leads to a suspension of the growth of root crops.

Watering

The first watering of beet beds is carried out immediately after sowing. This allows you to get fast shoots. Reinforced watering will also be required during the period of fruit formation. Next, you should follow a moderate regimen. In hot weather, the beds should be watered daily or every other day.

Do not allow the soil to dry out, this will lead to the death of germinating seeds. Adult plants are watered once a week. In the heat, do not water during the day, since beets have tender leaves, they can get burns. It is better to do this either at sunrise or at sunset. Overflowing soil can lead to cracking of beet root crops.

Other measures

  1. Immediately after the germination of the sprouts, thinning should be done, a row should be formed and the distance between the plants should be controlled. This measure allows you to adjust the size of the root crop.
  2. Carry out timely weeding and loosening between rows. Weeding should be done after every watering and rain.
  3. Feed the plant. Bordeaux quite actively consumes nutrients from the soil throughout the entire ripening period, so fertilization is extremely necessary.
  4. In no case should the beets be earthed up.

Harvesting

After 80-120 days Bordeaux 237 reaches its agronomic maturity and can be harvested. Watering must be stopped two weeks before the collection date, otherwise the fruits will be poorly stored, subject to rotting. You need to collect beets in dry weather. This variety is easily pulled out of the garden. In case of difficulties with large specimens, you can carefully dig up the root crop.

Storage

It is best to store Bordeaux in a cellar or on a balcony adapted for storing vegetables. The optimum storage temperature is from -1 to +3 degrees. At higher temperatures, the beets become flabby due to moisture loss. The root crop is carefully placed in boxes of wet sand or in baskets. Small amounts of beets can be stored in the refrigerator for a long time.

Diseases and pests

Bordeaux 237 is resistant to pests and diseases. Of the diseases, in rare cases, the vegetable affects Cercospora or Peronosporosis. Of insects, an attack by a weevil, leaf and root aphids, beet flies, flea beetles, and shtitonos is possible.

Prophylaxis

To avoid problems, before planting, it is recommended to soak the seeds in a solution of potassium permanganate. This will disinfect and disinfect the seedlings. Immediately after planting, it is good to sprinkle the beds with ash, this will reduce the acidity of the soil and scare away midges. Particular attention should be paid to weed control. The "litter" of the bed not only destroys the plant and inhibits its growth, but also serves as a breeding ground for insects.
