What to look for when choosing a ready-made greenhouse, how to do it right

To buy or not to buy a greenhouse is the first question that the happy owners of useful acres ask themselves. And the majority answer positively: the need for this building is beyond doubt.

And here summer residents are faced with a new problem: how not to get lost in the abundance of models, structures and materials that modern industry offers? How not to be disappointed in the purchase later?

Choosing the right greenhouse

Manufacturers classify greenhouse structures according to several parameters:

  • Greenhouse size;
  • Covering material type;
  • What is the frame made of and its construction;
  • Foundation requirements;
  • Useful area of the greenhouse;
  • Functional capabilities (ventilation, automatic irrigation system, the possibility of heating the soil).

It is worth focusing on them when choosing:

Greenhouse size

Here, not only the area of the site will be decisive, but also what crops are planned to be grown. The greenhouse should be sufficiently high and spacious.

The design of the greenhouses is simple: a material that transmits sunlight is installed on the frame. But it is on these two whales that the success of the gardener will be held.

Only by approaching the issue of choosing a frame and covering material with all meticulousness, you can subsequently avoid deep disappointment from the purchase.

Covering material

It is presented on the market in four positions:

  • polyethylene film;
  • spunbond;
  • glass;
  • polycarbonate.

Polyethylene film the most affordable material. Minus one - fragility. If you plan to operate the greenhouse for one season, the film will be a good choice. It transmits ultraviolet rays well. Density from 100 to 150 microns guarantees reliable protection of plants from light frosts. Easily installed on any frame.

It is better to purchase a reinforced film. She tolerates hurricane winds well, she is not afraid of hail. Reinforced film will protect plants from frost. Will last for several seasons.

Spunbond - dense white material until recently was used to cover plants directly in the beds.

Modern manufacturers presented a novelty to summer residents - Spunbond-60. This durable agrofibre is used to cover the frame of greenhouses. It lets in enough light. At the same time, it protects plants from sunburn. Spunbond is not afraid of temperature extremes and can withstand severe frosts.

Condensation does not accumulate in a greenhouse covered with spandbond. The fabric can be sewn to the desired size. Properties are not lost from this.

Glass remains one of the most popular materials. It is moisture resistant and transmits up to 85% of sunlight. Easy to clean. Does not emit harmful substances even with strong heating.
A serious disadvantage is the rigor of the installation requirements. The frame must be especially strong, the glass is heavy. The use of seals is mandatory. Any distortion of the frame will lead to cracking of the glass.

The material is fragile and requires careful handling. Finding such greenhouses on sale is not easy.

Cellular polycarbonate Is a durable polymer plastic. It consists of two layers, between which there are cavities with air. It comes out on top in popularity. The material has a slightly lower light transmission than glass. But it scatters sunlight better, which favorably affects the protection of plants from sunburn.

Polycarbonate is lighter and stronger than glass. It is distinguished by polycarbonate and high thermal insulation. It is achieved due to the layered structure of the material. If a heating system is installed, the greenhouse can be operated all year round.

What to look for:
Thickness of sheets. It is indicated based on the material of the frame. The best choice is 4–6 mm. A thinner sheet indicates low quality. It can break under the pressure of snow.
The weight. In a standard sheet, it must be at least 9 kg.

IMPORTANT: Light weight is not a lightweight version of the material, as unscrupulous manufacturers try to convince. He speaks of the presence in the composition of a large amount of secondary raw materials. Additional impurities not only reduce the density of the product, but can also emit an unpleasant odor in the summer heat.

The presence of markings indicating the outer and inner sides. This question should not be ignored. The fact is that a special transparent coating is applied to the outer side of the polycarbonate sheet, which protects against ultraviolet rays. If, during installation, the inner and outer sides are confused, the greenhouse will not fulfill its purpose. Moreover, it will quickly fail.

IMPORTANT: If the seller assures that the protective components are not applied to the surface, but are added directly to the plastic, refuse to purchase. Such polycarbonate will quickly deteriorate. A high-quality coating has a protective film on the outside, where the manufacturer's contacts are indicated.

Frame

If you can save on covering materials, then very high requirements should be imposed on the frame.
This is the case when in the choice between quality and price, one must give preference to the former.

Polypropylene pipes. This option can be a good choice if the greenhouse is not going to be a permanent structure.

The advantages of a frame made of polypropylene pipes are at the same time its disadvantage.

  • The lightness of the material. The finished structure, if necessary, can be moved to another place. This can be done not only by the owner of the cottage, but also by a strong wind. A greenhouse flying around the site will quickly lose its original appearance. It is difficult to restore a broken structure.
  • Ease of installation. The greenhouse is easy to assemble on your own. All parts of the greenhouse are fastened together with special clamps. But this work requires the utmost care. Cracks are not uncommon. In addition, the large number of parts reduces the rigidity of the frame.
  • You can do without a foundation. Plastic tubing is resistant to moisture, mold or mildew. Such a frame will serve for many years. But plastic does not tolerate temperature changes. The greenhouse will have to be cleaned for the winter.

Metal. Such frames are widely available on the market. It is the most reliable, strong and durable design. But there are also pitfalls here.

Study carefully what metal the frame is made of.

Galvanized steel profile attracts by its relative cheapness. It is easy to operate and does not corrode. Profile walls are usually thin, up to 1 mm thick. Therefore, the frame made of it is not suitable for heavy covering material. Often these greenhouses cannot withstand strong winds. Snow loads are also fatal for them. The edges of the profile are quite sharp. This must be taken into account if plastic wrap is used.
A profile pipe made of galvanized steel is more reliable, but also more expensive. The material is durable and can withstand heavy loads. Galvanizing will save you from rust.

IMPORTANT: Discard the purchase if you find welds when inspecting the frame. Even if they are qualitatively painted over with silver. These places will quickly rust. Good manufacturers connect parts together with "corners" and other elements.

Metal square profile without galvanizing it will withstand heavy glass and any type of polycarbonate. The material is durable and does not require additional reinforcing structures. The steel profile is covered with enamel. But such a measure rescues badly from corrosion. The frame will rust anyway. Exit in regular anti-corrosion treatment of the structure.

TIP: Massive structural elements shade the plants. Preference should be given to durable, but thinner elements (section 20 * 20 mm).

Aluminum profile - ideal material for the frame. It is durable, does not deteriorate under the influence of external factors. Despite its lightness, the aluminum construction is very robust.

Even heavy glass can be attached to it. A significant disadvantage is the high price.

Greenhouse strength

The strength of the frame and greenhouse cover depends largely on the distance between the arcs. Especially if the greenhouse is a stationary structure. It is desirable that this figure does not exceed 75 cm. Otherwise, the arcs will have to be strengthened.

TIP: See how many elements the arcs are made of. The fewer there are, the more reliable the design. It's good if the arcs are solid at all.

Ventilation

In addition to arches and transverse joints, the frame includes doors and transoms. It is better to choose a greenhouse where the doors are located on both sides and side vents are provided. This arrangement will make it possible to quickly ventilate the greenhouse.

In more expensive versions of greenhouses, transoms with hydraulic pushers are presented, which open and close themselves depending on the temperature inside the room.

The choice depends on the preferences and financial capabilities of the buyer. The main thing is that the building is ventilated. Proper ventilation will not only increase yields, but also extend the service life.

The form

The market offers ready-made greenhouses of two types: arched and gable "houses". The shape of the greenhouse is not only important for aesthetics.

Arched the shape is good because it is spacious. It has a larger heating area. In winter, snow does not accumulate on the roof, which means less stress on the structure. It is possible to install additional sections.

Classic greenhouse - "house" easier to assemble. It is easier to install the required number of vents. More cover material available. Possibility of mounting additional internal structures (shelves, racks).

Recommendations

Installing a finished greenhouse can be a major challenge. Better to decide it in advance.

Greenhouses with fewer constituent elements (arched shape) are easier to assemble on their own. It is better to entrust the installation of greenhouses with polycarbonate to specialists.

Engineering solutions offered by greenhouse manufacturers will also be useful:

  • An automatic irrigation system is needed if it is not possible to visit the country every day.
  • Electric heating of the soil will speed up the harvest and protect the plants from frost.

TIP: If the greenhouse will not be dismantled for the winter, be sure to check the permissible snow load. This indicator is spelled out in the technical data sheet of the product. It must be at least 100 kg per 1 sq. m.

The choice has been made - where to buy a greenhouse?

Of course, in specialized stores, if you do not want to run into low-quality goods!

It is better to give preference to large manufacturers. There are a number of explanations for this.

Firms specializing in the production of greenhouses are interested in the quality of the goods and set a warranty period. It can be up to five years old.

IMPORTANT: When buying, ask warranty cases... The manufacturer usually promises to replace the frame if it has been damaged as a result of external factors (wind, snow). But the next item is a whole list of situations when the warranty can be canceled.

From factory dealers it is easier to get all the information on the design features of a particular greenhouse.
Large producers are not interested in conflicts with buyers. They will try to solve any questions quickly, often in favor of the consumer.
