Among the genera of dicotyledonous angiosperm plants, Veronica is part of the botanical family of the Scrophulariaceae, subclass Asteridae, superdivision Spermatophyta. The beauty of their flowers makes them very appreciated.
Where the Veroniche come from
Plants generally called Veronica by gardening enthusiasts are of Asian, but also North American origin. They can be defined as perennial herbaceous plants, but it is also common to indicate with this name even simple smaller shrubs, which in fact turn out to be very similar to them.
How the Veronica flowers appear, which can have different colors but always suggestive
Given the remarkable beauty of the flowers generated by the plant described in our description, the Veronica, with its erect habit, is widely used to beautify the gardens and in particular for the formation of very suggestive flower beds, which give great satisfaction to their growers.
One of the peculiar characteristics of these flowers, which have four sepals and four petals, is a very reduced dimension which however does not diminish their beauty, on the contrary giving it a certain refinement. The flowers have a tubular corolla that ends with four flat lobes. If desired, they can be grouped into small side branches.
The flowering of Veronica results in the formation of inflorescences called racemes, which gradually pass from an oval to a much more elongated shape.
Generally the color of these flowers is pale purple or blue. Remarkable is the length of the Veronica, which can even reach two meters.
The flowers are characterized by the presence of an ovary that is located in a receptacle that has two female reproductive organs. They bloom during the period from spring to summer, while the fundamental action of pollination takes place thanks to the movement of insects. The multiplication can also be obtained by seed, which must be taken only when it is completely dried.
Veronica is a plant inserted between the dicotyledonous angiosperms, because in its seed the embryo has two cotyledons.
How to proceed for cultivation. The attack of parasites
This plant prefers a balanced and well-drained soil, rich in humus. Among the parasites that are used to create problems for Veronica we must mention the classic aphids, very small phytomitic insects also known with the simplest name of plant lice, which often infest its flowers and which must be promptly removed by spraying in the areas concerned products suitable for this purpose, also because they often carry dangerous viruses.
Some of the most relevant species. How the fruits are presented
At the moment there are about three hundred species (annual, herbaceous, perennial) of Veronica, among which we want to remember:
the Veronica persica, which shows flowers that arise from the so-called axilla of leaves and show peduncles of a certain length;
the Veronica officinalis, which has racemes that follow an alternate arrangement and are joined by the peduncle to a bract;
the Veronica beccabunga, with hermaphrodite flowers with a very smooth calyx. Its corolla has four white petals, two stamens, two stylus and an ovary.
Other species worth mentioning are the francispectae, the adamsii, the gaubae, the polita, the polium, the fridericae, the alpina.
The lower ones are better suited for positioning in the gardens, while the others are perfect for being cultivated in the borders and in particular the exaltata, with the blue flowers that bloom in summer, the teucrium, with lavender flowers, the virginica, with very light blue flowers, which bloom between the months of June and September.
For the rocky type gardens the most indicated species are instead the cinerea, with pink flowers that are born in full summer; the pectinata, only 15 cm high, with leaves with serrated edges and white and blue flowers; the satureioides, which presents flowers with very rare colors: dark blue, but with red veins, visible, in all their beauty, between May and September.
As far as fruits are concerned, they appear as capsules compressed from the side and have many seeds, sometimes even fifty.
