The grassy lawn
Having a beautiful turf is the dream of all garden lovers and if you have the foresight to adopt the necessary behaviors, it will not be difficult to create it, nor will it always keep it of its bright green color.
The plant of a lawn provides for the preliminary preparation, in the chosen area, of an efficient irrigation system, which even on hot summer days will provide the same dose of humidity.
Once this is done, and before sowing, you will have to proceed in the order:
to the sterilization of the soil, which consists in eliminating weeds whose presence would hinder the development of good ones, creating a factor of competition with them in search of water, light and mineral salts. Before carrying out weeding, however, it is necessary to irrigate the soil well so that the chemical used, finding the plants in vegetative growth, can be fully effective. For a lasting result it is advisable to use a herbicide with a systemic action, which, penetrating inside the plant up to the roots, allows its total eradication;
to the preparation of the seed bed, through the evaluation of the drainage and the substratum of the soil, which we could enrich by adding organic substances such as sterilized manure or mineral salts in the form of a special fertilizer, while to favor the germination of the seeds the use of potassium. If instead we want to improve the drainage capacity of the soil we should have the foresight to mix a good dose of sand or pumice stone. At this point, after having prepared it well with the help of a spade or a cutter, you will have to proceed to level it a first time with a rake, trying to eliminate any dunes and depressions. Then using a fairly heavy roller you will have to give it a certain form of settling and to proceed with sowing it will be essential to make another leveling with the rake.
Now you are finally ready to choose the type of seed best suited to your needs. In this sense it is useful to remember that the most suitable kinds, belonging to the grass family, are: the Festuca, which forms, in its various species, uniform and compact or more rustic lawns, suitable for trampled or exploited lawns;
the Cyndom, to which belongs the common wheatgrass, which we can meet spontaneously in the meadows and which has a strong propagation capacity.
Proceeding in this way to the choice of the seed, we will have to spread the same, in the ratio of one kilogram every 20-30 meters, first vertically and then horizontally taking care to pay close attention to the uniformity of the distribution.
Once the sowing has been carried out using the rake we will lightly bury it and pass again with the roller. Lastly, it is essential to irrigate the lawn every day for a few minutes, in order to avoid runoff and seed flotation phenomena, which could affect its uniformity of germination.
The flowery meadow
A colorful alternative to the grassy lawn, the flowery lawn will brighten up your garden with its colors, if you have the constancy of waiting for a certain period of time after sowing. In fact, given that generally the most suitable species are constituted by long-term wild plants with slow germination, in the beginning the first flowering in a similar meadow will be carried by annual species whose seeds are already present in the soil. Already from the second year, however, if you have had the foresight to eliminate weeds at the time of sowing, you can already see the results.
To obtain a lush flowery meadow it is essential to first choose the right soil, which must be in a fairly sunny position and poor in nutrients. For this purpose it can be impoverished by scraping the superficial part or, in the case of very clayey soils, it can be mixed with sand.
Having thus prepared the seed bed with the same mechanical devices used for the lawn, it can be made the same. The best time to do it is the spring, when the ground is quite heated after the harsh winter. A soil that is too cold indeed prevents the germination of wild flowers but favors the growth of weeds. In the same way it is preferable to avoid sowing in the summer when the drought causes a considerable loss of species. Once scattered on the ground, to reach a state of optimal germination it is necessary that the seeds are buried only slightly so that they can absorb sunlight as much as possible.
As far as irrigation is concerned, this is necessary only if we want all wild flowers to exceed the germination stage, given that even in periods of prolonged drought the conditions for the development of new shoots can be created.
A special care should be devoted to the mowing of the lawn, which must be carried out according to the development of the vegetation, generally in two fairly close periods that correspond to the end of June-beginning of July and the end of August-beginning of September. The frequent removal of the remains of the mowing involves a reduction in the number of species over time, therefore it is advisable to allow the desiccation of these on the lawn so as to allow new production of seeds and consequent regeneration of other plants.
Lawn garden: The lawn "a clod"
If you do not have enough patience or time to implement all the tricks that a lawn system requires, you can resort to those "sod", real turf mats in rolls now available in all nurseries. This very fast method that allows to shorten the preparation time of the soil and the eradication of weeds, allows you to quickly build a turf and walk on it immediately even on poorly adapted surfaces.
The preparation of the soil is in fact limited to the flattening and elimination of debris and stones, as well as, if we wish to avoid water stagnation, to the distribution of a layer of sand over it. Immediately after the operation, having already proceeded with the purchase, it is advisable to proceed in a short time to lay the clods on the ground, laying out a first row and then a second and making sure that each clod is straddling two clods of the previous row .
When the whole surface is covered it is essential to make a couple of rolls and then clean with a soft broom. With regular and frequent waterings the rooting times for the underlying substrate will be rapid and after 13-15 days the clods will be definitively anchored to the ground.
